Joby Doffek joined Rough-Fit in November 2002. Since that time she has not only transformed her own body but she has inspired many other members to work towards the same goal. She was also the first winner of our Rewards program - you can also view our "Tribute to Joby" video.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I was motivated by photos I received from my graduation and from my sister's wedding a few months prior to joining. Those were the last straw. I had been gaining weight a few pounds each year for the last several years which resulted in the need to buy bigger and bigger clothes.
I had also experienced a few medical problems such as back problems, depression etc. which were all a result of my weight and overall physical condition. I had reached a point that I would not make Dr appointments, because I knew they would weigh me. I was walking by Max Muscle when I saw a flyer for a "Boot Camp". My friend and I had talked about trying something like that for the past several months, so I picked up the flyer and decided to call. I talked to Max Muscle and arranged to go out and watch one of their 6am classes before I would join. My friend and I showed up to the park where the class was being held, but the class was nowhere to be found. It was not until about a year later that I learned the Max Muscle class was being held at a different park with the same name. It was just a coincidence that Lindsey and Kim were hosting a Rough-Fit class on the same morning. We watched the class for about 15 minutes, and talked to Lindsey and I was totally sold. I signed up right away and started the next session about two weeks later on November 16, 2002.
Lindsey was absolutely positively the person that sold me on the program!! Her energy, passion, commitment, and enthusiasm (and caring) did it for me!!

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
At the time I joined Rough-Fit, I thought I was going to stay only a few sessions (one or two) and I would then be able to continue on my own. My goal at that time was very short sighted - I wanted to lose weight - 50 - 60 lbs - and I looked at Rough-Fit as a way to begin.
My goals changed with each subsequent class. I kept my original weight loss goal, but also began to understand the importance of strength and overall lifestyle changes.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on? My first focus was my overall weight. Once I started the program and began to understand the basics, my focus became threefold. I wanted to get stronger and be able to keep up with the class, I needed to change my eating habits, and I wanted to lose weight. My trouble areas were numerous - could not walk/run 1/4 mile without being winded, could not do modified pushups without straining my back, and was definitely a stress eater. In fact, my eating habits were so bad, I am amazed I did not weigh a lot more at the time I started.

Joby Before

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
Prior to joining, I tried many things, but never stuck with one long enough to make a difference and to see changes. I mountain biked, hiked, rollerbladed, wind surfed, kayaked, and walked. By looking at the list, I should have been in the best shape of my life. But understand, I never took the time to really do any of those things well. I really dabbled in them once in awhile, would get bored, and would stop. I must have stopped and started at least 100 different exercise routines, the longest lasting a few months at the most.
A friend and I trained for the San Diego Marathon on January 20, 2002. We were both turning 40 that year and wanted to do something extraordinary. We walked 5 miles a night, three nights a week, and 15 miles on Saturdays. It took us 6 months to train, and just a few hours during the marathon to realize we were not in the shape we thought we were in. Clarification - we trained to walk the Marathon, and completed it in 7 hours and 55 minutes. But I did not do any strength training, did not change my eating habits, and overall expected some kind of miracle :)

How long have you been in the program?
I started Rough-Fit on November 18, 2002. That date will always stay in the forefront of my mind, because it is my second birthday. It is the day I got my life back, and I owe everything to Lindsey! I started going 5 days a week. I have consistently gone 5 days a week since then, except January and February 2004 when I went 4 days a week. I missed Rough-Fit so much that one day a week that I went back to 5 days a week in March.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
Absolutely positively Lindsey and all of the people in Rough-Fit. Each person brings their own style to the class and their own personalities. It has never been about "having to go to class" but instead it has been about meeting your friends in the morning, and working out together. It is about having Lindsey to guide us, motivate us, and challenge us. We motivate each other and challenge each other and celebrate our victories together.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
The workouts are incredibly effective. It is never the same old thing. Every workout is different and interesting and challenging. And it is not about being as good as everyone in class. It is about being a bit better today than you were yesterday.
There are friendly competitions between the class members, but it is all in the name of fun. No one is ever made to feel they are not as good as someone else, and all of us in the class have our strengths and weaknesses. Lindsey is wonderful about bringing new exercises and routines to the class, and making us try things that are challenging and awkward. But the next time we try the same exercises, we have improved which results in added confidence.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
The most challenging part of the program for me is the goal setting. I struggle each week to set realistic and challenging goals. I understand the importance of the goals, but still need help to use them effectively. The second challenge for me remains my eating habits, more specifically stress eating. That is something I have to work on each and every day to manage.

What progress have you made to date?
As of our last weigh-in, I have lost 45lbs. I started with Rough-Fit wearing sizes 14 and 16 depending on the clothes. I am now wearing size 8 and soon to start buying size 6. While I absolutely love these numbers, they do not tell the whole story. When I started, my run/walk time for the 1.5 mile eval was 18:55. And that was no picnic. I was definitely struggling to make the distance. My best time now for the 1.5 mile run is 12:10. It makes a difference not to be carrying around that extra 45lbs thats for sure. I also started with 13 modified pushups. I am now able to do 30 regular pushups in a minute with good form and without straining my back.
When I started Rough-Fit, I could barely jog 50 feet without being winded. Over the last year, I have run numerous 5K races, one 8K race, participated in the Camp Pendleton Mud Run 10K Obstacle race twice, participated in the Muddy Buddy 10K Obstacle run/bike race, and completed one 12K trail run. I have averaged one race a month since March 2003.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
Number one for me is writing down everything I eat. This has had the most impact on my eating habits. Not only does it make you account for every bite you take, but it also gives you an idea of what is lacking (or too prevalent) in your diet. I use a diary in Excel to track my progress. This diary also computes how many servings of fruit, vegetable, meat, dairy, grains/bread, and water I have consumed in a day. This helps me make changes during the week when I see I am missing fruit but maybe too heavy on Bread servings.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
Rough-Fit has changed my life, literally. I have new found energy each and every day. I am back to enjoying things I thought were lost forever when I was too heavy to participate. I no longer look in the mirror in disgust. I am now proud of my body and my strength and I smile each and every day. I no longer think negative thoughts about myself all day long. Of course there are a few thoughts that creep in here and there, but all I have to do is think about what I have accomplished and I chase those thoughts away. I now love to shop for clothes, something I always dreaded.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Yes. And all because of Lindsey and all of my friends at Rough-Fit. I look forward every day to seeing everyone and working out together. I even miss them on weekends and love to attend the Saturday runs just to get together. It would be impossible to stay committed if it were not so much fun and so different every day. You can see Lindsey's passion and commitment in everything she does.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My long term goals are two fold. First and foremost, I am committed to keeping the weight off. I am now searching for the right balance. I want to find the right weight for me. That is the weight that makes me feel the best and the weight that allows me flexibility in my eating and exercise routines to stay there. I will continue to focus on my eating habits, which one day I hope will be as second nature to me as my exercise habits have become. Second, is my goal to continue to get stronger and healthier. I look forward to improving my core, balance, and strength, along with my cardio. Rough-Fit will definitely complement these goals. I plan to continue at least 3 days a week if not more. Not only do I look forward to the workouts, but I look forward to learning new exercises and new things about myself. Each day that I attend Rough-Fit, I gain more confidence and find ways to challenge myself that I would never have considered in the past.

Joby Today

Tracy joined Rough-Fit in June 2004 as a 1:1 client as was the winner at our second Rewards event. She is a great example of what you can achieve when you are dedicated to making healthy lifestyle changes and committed to stay on track with you goals.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
A friend and I were talking about health and fitness and I expressed my desire to incorporate exercise into my life, but that I wasn't sure how to do that with my busy life. I had back surgery last November (2003) for a severe herniated disc, and have had chronic lower back pain for several years. I am married with two small children, work full time and have various other commitments as well. She told me about Lindsey and Rough-Fit and thought maybe the Rough-Fit remote program would work for me. So I met with Lindsey in a coffee shop and found out that her philosophy was something that I could agree with and work with.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My goal was to start a program to begin to strengthen my core. I was told by my doctors that that was what I had to do to escape the back pain, but I had no idea how to do that. If I could lose some weight and get in shape in the process that would be great, but getting rid of my chronic pain was my main goal in the beginning.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
My core mostly.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I have never been one to exercise, even when I was little. I was a ballerina for years and took dance classes 5 times a week, but that was fun, not exercise (hee hee). Since graduating from college, exercise has not been a part of my life.

How long have you been in the program?
I started working with Jeannine the first week of June 2004.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
Since I work out privately I get a very tailored program. I was amazed at the level of knowledge from both Jeannine and Lindsey. I have really learned a lot about nutrition and exercise from both of them. This, to me, is a benefit I couldnt get from a traditional gym facility or from the latest wacky diet program. I am encouraged by the results I see in myself and the passion that Jeannine brings to every work out. She really makes me feel like I can do this, and is so encouraging to me all the time.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Since I had never worked out properly before, I didnt know what to expect from my workouts. I was pleased that while we target my core, I am getting a full body workout every time we meet. I am getting some muscle definition that I didnt plan on, which is really cool. I just bought my first halter top 6 months ago you couldnt get me near that style of clothing!

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Exercising outside of my Rough-Fit training with Jeannine. Since that is a set appointment that is in my calendar that I pay for, I find I am able to make the time to work out. But those 5:30am morning walks by myself since I am NOT a morning person are another story. My goal is to walk 5 days a week for 30 minutes, but so far I have only made it 3 days in a week, and only recently has that been consistent. But I know that I will get there someday!

What progress have you made to date?
I have lost 17 pounds so far. I can now do 10 modified pushups whereas when I started I couldn't even do 3. I have improved my balance, and though I have a long way to go to a strong core, I can feel that my muscles all over are getting stronger and responding to the workouts better than when I started. I eat better than I have in my entire life, and feel this is something I can maintain.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
I knew next to nothing about healthy eating when I first started. But I am a quick study and I have really changed my eating habits. I learned how to count calories and make sure I was eating the right foods foods to keep me full but be good for me at the same time. When I first started this and Jeannine told me I should stick to 1500 calories a day, I laughed and thought No freakin way. That was impossible I would starve! Now I average about 1300 calories a day and am rarely hungry or deprived. I religiously write down everything I eat, and Jeannine reviews it on a weekly basis. I found books and websites to help me track my calorie intake. For example, Ive learned about which vegetables also count as a starch, and that I need more dairy in my diet. I always thought that good nutrition was this weird and wacky process that I could never understand, much less follow. In the past few months I have become more educated, so its not so confusing to me now, and Im finding that with the foods I chose, I naturally end up with a balanced day of proteins, fruits and veggies. I recently went to Disney World with my husband and two boys. I found that I was able to make good choices while spending days at theme parks. I made breakfast, brought snacks and found healthy alternatives at the parks themselves. I shared desserts, and even worked out while we were there. I went on vacation, had a great time, and still lost 2 pounds! I figure if I can do that on vacation, I can keep up this new way of living always.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
Where do you start with this one? I spent a lot more time thinking about the foods I am going to eat, and the effect they will have on my overall health. While I dont believe I will ever lose the craving or the enjoyment of all the bad foods I ate so regularly before, I am better able to make good choices about when and where to eat them. Most of the time the high calorie content of the food just isnt worth having it but I know I can on a moderate level whenever I want to, and that is enough for me.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
I spent a long time unhappy with myself, and was ecstatic that my prayers had been answered when I found Rough-Fit. Jeannine is so encouraging to me, and I feel so much better overall, that I dont want to stop. I have a system that is working for me and I enjoy the workouts, especially with the results I see. I went into this program knowing it was going to take a long time for me to get a strong core (and therefore less back pain). I was expecting an 18 month program, now I know I want to exercise regularly for life.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
Eliminating my back pain is still my biggest motivating factor, and that means having a strong core for the rest of my life. I know now that I cant just get a strong core and then stop working on it it is something that needs to be maintained by working out those muscles constantly. Rough-Fit is the program that can help me achieve that.

Tracy on her 10th wedding anniversary cruise in March 2004

Tracie Quong joined Rough-Fit in April 2005.  She is our latest Rewards winner.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I had looked at Rough Fit 3 years ago with my friend Joby, decided not to join (but Joby did) and in the meantime put on 20 pounds. When I saw Joby a few years later, I was shocked to see how great she looked and that motivated me to join.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
Just to get the blood pumping again was the most important. Okay - secretly, I wanted to lose weight, exercise on a regular basis like I did before, and get off my blood pressure medication.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
There are a lot of specific mental issues I want to work on, but I cant go into that here. Oh, you mean physically, no nothing specific, just that I needed to get back to an overall healthier lifestyle.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
Years ago I did step classes and a little weight training. Just prior to Rough-Fit I did body sculpting with the same instructor for 7 years, but because of her changing schedule, our regular classes moved around and went from 3 days a week to 1. In conjunction I tried spinning, the step machine and the treadmill, but I disliked those things so much, I stopped doing cardio altogether.

How long have you been in the program?
I started on April 11, 2005 so almost 8 months.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
I like the fact that Lindsey tries different ways to motivate us. Not every thing will work for every person, but she is constantly trying new things, so somethings bound to hit home and stick. Also, the camaraderie at Rough-Fit is hard to beat.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Definitely, the workouts are effective. If I didnt think the workouts were effective, I wouldnt be here. Being constantly supported by the trainers, the variety of exercises for overall toning (soreness everywhere), and having the other members there (it helps to have others hurt with you) makes for an effective program.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Its a toss up between getting up when the alarm goes off at 5:15am, going when its 40 degrees out or its raining, writing it down, eating more healthy foods, and ohhhh.RUNNING.

What progress have you made to date?
I have lost 28 pounds and a whole lotta body fat. My blood pressure has gone down and I have reduced the dosage of my meds.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
As much as I hate to say it, tracking what I ate really did help. I liked using mypyramid.gov. It takes the guess work out of what Im eating and puts the numbers in black and white. Its a strong reality check for what goes into my mouth and if Im not eating healthy, its not a surprise to me why I cant lose the weight. Ive also come to realize its the combination of eating from all the food groups that helps me lose the weight, and tracking it helps get me where I need to be.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I dont live to eat like I used to. Im more aware of what goes into my mouth and how it will affect me physically (are those French fries really worth it?).

Has it been easy to stay committed?
It was more of a struggle in the beginning, but gets easier as time goes on.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My goal right now is to just keep on exercising and living an overall healthier lifestyle and as long as Lindsey is yelling :-) Ill be there to hear it!

Adrienne joined Rough-Fit at the beginning of 2004.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I found out about Rough-Fit because Lindsey's Rough-Fit vehicle passed by me. Naturally I can't stand anyone passing me on the road, so I sped up to overtake her, and ended up being intrigued by the promise of getting fit outdoors.
Rough-Fit seemed so perfect for me because I get easily bored and can't stand working out inside a gym. I was motivated to join because my life was losing its balance. I had been given a new position and responsibilities at work and as a result I was putting in longer hours, sleeping less, and eating more junk food to deal with the stress. Exercise and sleep fell by the wayside, my moods and energy dropped, and my weight soared.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My goal was to just get back in shape and lose some weight.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I didn't really exercise that much. Although I'd played sports in high school and college, I stopped once I entered "the real world." I did ski and hike but not enough to make a difference in my fitness level.

How long have you been in the program?
3 months.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoy the camaraderie and the ever-changing workouts outdoors.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
The workouts are amazingly effective because correct form is emphasized in whatever we do, whether it's cardio or strength training. I never thought that I would see results so quickly. By the 3rd week into the program, I had noticed that while skiing, I was stronger, lighter, more balanced, and able to take on more challenging runs.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Watching my chocolate intake and accepting Lindsey's conviction that I'm going to fall in love with running (I'm still working on that one -- "pole-pole").

What progress have you made to date?
The tangibles: I lost 10 lbs, chopped off 2 minutes off my 1-1/2 mile run, and ran my first 5K. Now about those push-ups.....

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
I have a serious sweet tooth and am a chocoholic. When I joined Rough-Fit, I had to make it a goal to watch my sugar intake and drink lots of water (I still have to make it a weekly goal to watch my sweets intake). This has had a ripple effect with my eating habits because now I eat more salads and fruits. I even snack on baby carrots, whereas before I used to think vegetables were pretty disgusting. I'm finding out that as with all things, the key is balance and moderation, not deprivation. If I had been told that I HAD to give up chocolate, I probably would've run as far away as I could've from anything Rough-Fit related.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit? Well, where do I start?
I definitely have more energy from eating better and from all the endorphins rushing through my body. As a result I'm better able to deal with the demands of work and balance it with the other aspects of my life. I've always been an optimist about life, but it seems that now I'm even more excited about each day.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Absolutely! Rough-Fit has become an intrinsic part of my life. It's quite exciting and gratifying to see my progress. I can't wait to see where I'll be in 6 months' time.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
At the moment, I don't have any specific goals, but the possibilities are wide open, and that excites me. There are always mountains to be climbed and more challenging ski runs to conquer. There's even the possibility of adventure racing....I see Rough-Fit providing not just the workouts to prepare me, but also the encouragement, the push and the support in whatever endeavor I choose.

Rean joined Rough-Fit in January 2004.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
On TV (only kidding) - one of my work associates managed to transform his body over a period of 3-4 months and it was visible for everyone to see, so I asked him about the "secret formula" and it turned out to be Rough- Fit.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
I travel extensively because of the nature of my profession and found that "jet lag" affected me badly if and when I had to travel internationally - being fitter and in better shape would certainly help me out in this area. Besides, I really wanted to improve the overall quality of my life style seeing that I am approaching the "big 50".

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
Legs, torso, core, back, abs, arms - anything left on the human body? No, I needed a "complete make-over" and I'm still saving for the plastic surgery part (just kidding).

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I used to run extensively when I was much younger (25+ years ago), but I have not done any exercise other than golf (yes, Lindsey I know golf is not exercise!!) for an extended period of time. I would jump on a treadmill every 3 months for 10 minutes, but would not be able to walk for a week after that.

How long have you been in the program?
3-4 months

What do you enjoy most about the program?
Working out in a group in the outdoors -incredible how much you can push yourself if other people are "suffering" with you.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Yes, because it is a "total body" workout - impossible to find other than with Rough-Fit. Even the most expensive gyms do not provide what Rough-Fit gives you.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Having to compete with Koos, the guy with the transformed body.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
The more calories you burn, the more beer you can drink without gaining weight ;-)
On a serious note, I find that I eat healthier since I have started working out with Rough-Fit, so the overall balance is goodness.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
My golf game has improved significantly because of greater flexibility and I wake up in the morning now with a much clearer head and a lot more energy - I also find that "jet lag" does not affect me that badly anymore when I travel in different time zones.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Yes, because it is fun to do and the encouragement never stops, so that makes it easy to stay true to the cause.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
I would like to maintain a healthy life style and combine that with competing in more 10km/20km races - Rough-Fit is key in enabling me to achieve both of these goals.

Evy joined Rough-Fit in March 2005.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I learned about Rough Fit from a co-worker, Tracy Meneses. After speaking with Lindsey, I reviewed the website and saw Joby's video and was convinced that it "might" work. I have battled my weight all my life, and my Mother passed away and was very heavy. I decided that if I was going to do this, it was now or never.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My goal when I joined was to lose a specific amount of weight within a specific amount of time. Now, it's completely changed to being healthy and having a healthier lifestyle. The fact that I have lost weight was obviously a part of it, but the aesthetic purposes have taken a back seat to enjoying the time with the group, and "learning" to enjoy exercise.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
Well, liking veggies, I am still working on it, and basically learning to like exercise.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
In the past, I have tried several things but never stuck to anything more than a couple of months. Now, I have been here just over a year. When I first started I thought I was going to die, just walking around the park, now I am starting to run, and it's an amazing feeling of accomplishment to know that I can do it.

How long have you been in the program?
A little over a year.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
Honestly, the friendships I have developed. Lindsey and all the trainers CARE about us. It's not just a business and that is evident. I had only been a part of rough fit for a couple of months, when I had my accident last summer, and they were all amazing. I felt that the support and encouragement from everyone really helped in my recovery, and in my desire to return.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Yes they work, because they are consistent, and Lindsey keeps us guessing. It's never the same thing and that keeps it from getting boring.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Getting up at 4:45am, because of the distance from my home, but it's worth it.

What progress have you made to date?
I have nearly lost 30 lbs, I am down 2 sizes, and I "almost" like to exercise, I am beginning to run more than walk.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I am more energetic, and my disposition is more positive. I feel younger, and I actually think about what I am eating.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
No especially because of both of my injuries. However, it is because of Lindsey's legitimate concern and care, as well as those of the friends I have made, that I continue. I see the change in my body and mind, and I don't want to give up.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My long term goals are to lose an additional 60 lbs. and continue to feel physically and emotionally better. I realize now, that it's a way of life not a temporary fix.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I discovered a flyer on my doorstep advertising Rough-Fit and I liked the idea of the outdoor workouts. It took Lindsey about a year of phone calls to get me and Fausta, my wife, to join.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit? My goal was to lose weight and get physically fit.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
I was unable to jog due to knee problems and I wanted to lose weight.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
Exercise was not part of my lifestyle and had not been for at least the past 10-15 years.

How long have you been in the program?
Im proud to say Ive been in the program over two years!

What do you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoy the variety of the workouts and the locations. Were not stuck inside a gym day after day. Were outside in a park rain or shine. If someone had told me 2 years ago I would be working out in the rain, the Santa Ana winds or the hot summer sun I wouldnt have believed them. Now we dont think twice about the weather, we just do it!

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
The workouts are varied and emphasize working our core muscles. We work a variety of muscles along with stabilization techniques and concentrate on strengthening the core muscles.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
The most challenging part of the program is realizing that it doesnt happen overnight. Lindsey reminds us that it takes baby steps to get to our goal and that we didnt get unfit overnight. Another challenge I have is remembering to write down what I eat in the food journal.

What progress have you made to date?
I have lost over 25 pounds. With physical therapy and exercise my knees have improved and strengthened and I am now able to jog. I have completed two 5ks, will run a 10k in October and another 5k in November. I recently completed a 15 mile grueling hike with temperatures over 100 degrees in the Santa Ana Mountains. I would have never attempted this hike before joining Rough-Fit.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
I am more aware of what I eat and drink when I write it down in the food journal and count calories. I have learned to read labels on food items and count calories.

Has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
With two teenage kids at home Fausta and I are challenged with providing healthy food and not putting junk food in the house which I would end up eating. One of Dr. Phils rules for weight loss is creating a no fail environment. This is a great help to me. If its not in the house Im not able to eat it. In the past I would rationalize buying cookies for the kids and I would end up eating them. Our eating habits are having a positive effect on our kids and they are eating healthier.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Its not always easy to stay committed. Ive come to realize that everyone falls off of the wagon occasionally and whats important is to get right back on track and not become discouraged.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My long term goal is to stay active and fit and to achieve my goal weight and remain there. I see Rough-Fit as an important part in helping me achieve these goals.

Maria was one of our most recent Rewards finalists and has now not only reached her goal weight but is doing a great job of maintaining it.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I bid on a gift certificate at a silent auction. I was motivated by the desire to lose the excess weight I gained from my 2 pregnancies.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My main goal was to lose weight. I gained so much from my 2 pregnancies and after my lifestyle change (in getting married, changing jobs, etc.) that I was uncomfortable and felt really unhealthy.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
Based on my genetic makeup, Im predisposed to gain most of my weight in my abdomen. I know from working out in the past that lots of cardio and weight bearing exercises have really helped me lose that bulge. So, my focus was on getting rid of the love handles.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
Prior to Rough-Fit, I walked and did yoga.

How long have you been in the program?
I started Rough-Fit May 31, 2004. I will never forget that date.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
I truly love Rough-Fit all in all, so its really hard to name one thing. I enjoy the camaraderie, the varied and challenging workouts, and the motivation that Lindsey and Jeannine provide.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
The workouts are indeed effective. My shapely legs and buttocks are a testament to that. After that ball workout with Lindsey last Thursday, I could feel every single ab muscle underneath the fat. I know those muscles are there and the challenging workouts have really helped to bring them out!

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
The workouts are always challenging, but being consistent and getting up at 5:00 AM every morning will always be the most challenging for me. But, when I dont get up and work out, I always miss it. My day is not complete when I dont work out now.

What progress have you made to date?
Not only do I get up and go to Rough-Fit on most days, I have learned to eat healthier and Ive lost 10 pounds. I realized that losing 10 pounds was my goal for the year. Ive reached it, now I have to keep it off and lose the next 5 to 10 pounds (one pound at a time).

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
Writing down what I consume has been key for me in eating healthfully. I tried another book, but I found that the journal that I got from Rough-Fit is so much better in logging in food and nutrition content.

Has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I have fibromyalgia, which affects the body psychologically and physiologically. Since having started Rough-Fit, I have been able to give up all but one of my medications (the dose on that one is super low). Most people I know with fibro cant function without their meds, but they dont exercise. The regular, consistent exercise, eating healthy, nutritious food, logging it in my journal and getting more rest, have truly impacted every aspect of my life. I have more energy, I feel so much better about myself, too.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
It is not easy to stay committed to this regular exercise plan, but I remind myself everyday about not having to take medication to feel well physically or emotionally and fitting into a size 4 again!

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
I dont want to give up my healthy lifestyle. I want to be a good example for my kids. I see my parents and other family members with sedentary lifestyles or having diabetes, heart disease or fibromyalgia and I just know I want to make my life a better one. Its much more fun exercising with buddies and having a knowledgeable and friendly trainer guiding me. As long as I can do it, Rough-Fit will be part of my healthy life plan.

Donna joined a little over 2 years ago.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I first heard about Rough-Fit through the City of Tustin Recreation department. I just started to lose weight as part of my New Years resolution and had started a weight training program. I knew I had to get more exercise in, especially cardio. My husband and I decided we wanted to do more things together and we joined.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My goal was to lose weight and increase my cardio. In the process I dumped 42 lbs (so far) and the husband (242 pounds, if you count him!)

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
Everything for me was a problem area. I had no stamina, no strength and the worst part was no desire. I absolutely hated anything that involved working out.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
Nothing..ever.not even in high school. The first time I walked one lap around the park, I thought I was going to have a heart attack!

How long have you been in the program?
I started one year ago. Time flies when you are having fun!

What do you enjoy most about the program?
I have fun now! I really, really like the night group (hi guys!), I like running (did I really just say that?). I like almost everything (except jump rope). I have a gym membership that I have had for 10 years and a Jane Fonda tape that has never been opened (and its a least 16 years old). I would never do these on my own. I constantly need someone to hold me accountable (thanks Lindsey).

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Absolutely they are effective, but only if you are willing to put forth the effort. Every exercise can be done by every fitness level. The social aspect makes it easier and Lindsey stays on top of me! There is enough variety that we dont ever have the same work out.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
I have really tight hamstrings and anything that requires me to stretch those causes me grief. I have had some low back problems recently and Ive regressed some and that makes me upset. Ive worked way too hard to stop now!

What progress have you made to date?
I am most proud of my cardio improvement. I wasnt able to walk a lap and now I am running them. I ran my first (notice I said first and not last) 5K and was happy with my finish (thanks Lisa and Candice for the push). I can do pushups (yeah) and the attitude about the whole adventure has changed.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
I have my B.S. Degree in Dietetics and Food Administration so I didnt need a lot of coaching on the food end. I just needed to keep my portion size in check. My daughter, Jennifer, belongs to Rough-Fit and is on the remote program while at school in New York. Lindsey has been helping her a lot with her nutrition because of course, she wont listen to her mother!

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
Wowis that a loaded question for me. How am I different? I am single now (hello single guys), I eat healthier, I like to exercise and do it 4 days per week (sometimes 5). It is a lifestyle. I cannot imagine ever stopping this.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
I am committed and I should be committed. I have become a bit of a nut (fitness nut). I run even when I dont have to!

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
I signed up for and am anxious to do the Mt Whitney hike this summer, Id like to do a few more 5K runs and maybe (Lindsey-I said maybe) do a half marathon next year. Who knows, maybe a full marathon in the future. I still would like to drop 10 more pounds, but that is getting harder and harder with all my new muscle-mass! Rough-Fit will be with me every step of the way. I cannot imagine doing without it!

Kerry was one of the very first Rough-Fit members.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
My parents told me that a friend of theirs sister (Lindsey) was starting a workout program, and she needed people to "try it out". So we were officially the first Rough-Fit members!!

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My original goal was to simply lose weight.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
They are all trouble areas!!

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I walked, jogged and rode a bicycle, but I would go through cycles of doing it 4-5 times a week, to weeks of nothing.

What do you enjoy most about the program? It is so great to get outdoors, and really feel like you get a good workout, I mean really SWEAT! The people in the class are always nice, and Lindsey is a great motivator. Even though you are in a class, everyone gets personal attention. The best part is that it is FUN, all these things combined keep you coming back, and help you stick to a good exercise routine.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Yes, when we do toning days, I can feel it the next day, it feels good to know you worked out hard. I have also seen great improvements in my own fitness level, as well as others in the class.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Making it to all the classes. I have a weird schedule being a student, and wish I could attend more classes.

What progress have you made to date?
I can run, pretty fast for me, for 30 minutes, I work out 4-7 times a week, every week without fail. I have lost a total of 20lbs over a year and a half, and the main thing is that I have learnt to love exercise, and even when I cant make the class I go for a jog, or do a workout video.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
My self esteem has improved, I feel better about the way I look, Im not lazy anymore, and I think of myself as strong and active, and when you think these things about yourself, you are them!

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Yes, except for time when school schedule clashes.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
I want to remain committed, lose more weight until I am at a healthy weight, stay fit in order to avoid the many physical problems that occur in a maturing adult. Less long term I want to stay active and healthy this summer while I am away on vacation.

Donna joined Rough-Fit in January 2005.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I learned about Rough-Fit from a member I was impressed at how she looked and described how she felt. I had wanted to lose some weight for some time but just could not motivate myself. Rough-Fit seemed like it would be a good motivator.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
Initially I just wanted to lose weight. After joining, I realized that what I really wanted to do was to get healthier and losing weight was part of that goal.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
Everywhere waist, stomach, butt, thighs, armsalso needed to learn to eat healthier.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
Consistent exercise none. However, I did some biking (mostly for prep for MS ride in the fall), snow skiing, and scuba diving.

How long have you been in the program?
Since mid-January through the raining winter still cant believe I was running in the pouring rain :-)

What do you enjoy most about the program?
The support in getting healthier. I look forward to meeting with my new friends in the morning and I am not a morning person. It helps that we have a great group to meet every morning. And the variety of exercises it is always interesting even if I cant do all the routines.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
They are effective. The group and the variety keeps it fun and motivates me to show up every week. I have never been able to stick with a gym exercise program because I would get bored and quit going.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
6am :-) And the stomach exercises. I still cant believe I ran a 5K when I started, I couldnt even run 100 yards.

What progress have you made to date?
I have lost almost 10 pounds and almost 3% body fat. Best of all, I have a waist again and have dropped my pant size.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
Tracking what I eat it helps keep me focused and think about whether I want to admit on my log what I eat or drink. I am honest in my log, even if I have a bad day. I just get refocused the next day.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I feel better, have more energy, am stronger and am able to do the fun stuff better (skiing and diving) and for longer times, and I eat much better. I dont have the desire to eat junk (or at least as often) and I love when my friends notice the difference. I have made exercise a part of my daily life. I even exercised while on a business trip, something I would never have done before. It just makes me feel so much better.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
At first it was difficult, but the longer I have been going, the easier it is. Because I feel better, I want to continue to have that great feeling.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
Get to my weight goal, increase flexibility, and stay healthy thru both exercise and healthy eating. Continuing with Rough-Fit is my plan to help me continue to make progress and maintain a healthy balance.

Koos has been a Rough-Fit member since the end of 2003.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
My wife andmy wife.. Jeannine was doing Rough-Fit for a couple of months and helped me along to join up.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
First and foremost was to reduce body fat and build some muscle. I could barely do one pushup. Ok, ok, I couldnt even do a single one. My body fat sat at 36%. Today a year later I can do roughly 40 pushups and my body fat is down to 17% and not to mention the muscles Ive built!

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
Hmm.. Lets start with the non troubled areas.. the list would be shorter that way. I have not exercised in 30 years (and my 30th birthday is a couple of years away!!) Specifically I have really bad cholesterol, so bad that I was on cholesterol medication around the age of 23, so an unhealthy lifestyle was the troubled area I needed to work on. And every aspect of it!

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I was actually the regular semi-professional basketball, baseball, hockey, football, golf and volleyball player!!! - on the Xbox ;) That counts right?

How long have you been in the program?
Pretty much exactly one year! And Loving it. Lindsey has been a true motivator to ensure I stay on a regular schedule.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
The group fitness activities. I'm pretty sociable and not very motivated to exercise, so the regular old gym thing was just not going to do it for me. The group is what keeps me going, the motivation we give each other and what they have all achieved is pretty inspiring.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Umm... I'm down from 36% to a 17% body fat, so yeah it is effective! The Rough-Fit team knows what they are doing!! The motivation and help I get to stay on track with a healthy lifestyle is for sure what keeps me coming back.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Keeping up with Rean!! Man, that guy runs like little rabid rabbit!! I had plans that involve a dark night and a steel pipethat should slow him down a bit!!

What progress have you made to date?
Well lets see, my cholesterol is under control and I am on absolutely NO cholesterol medication. My body fat is rock bottom, I can run 5km without walking a single step, I can do about 40 pushups (beats the almost one I could do)... the list just goes on and on..

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
Ok, here I have been slacking a bit, but at least with Jeannine (my wife) being part of the program, she has made sure that we at least try and eat healthy.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I used to wake up every morning with a stiff neck and shoulders and sometimes Murphy would throw in a pounding tension headache. I have not had a stiff neck or shoulders since I started Rough-Fit. I sold all my stock in Aleve and bought stock in those little blue pills (Actually, hahaha, for the record I dont need that - yet ;-)

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Well, no matter what people tell me, it is not easy to get up off that couch, put the Xbox on pause and go exercise. But Lindsey and my fitness group buddies have made it a lot easier. If it was just the regular gym subscription vs. my Xbox, my get-up-and-go would get-up-and-leave!

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
I want to shed a few more pounds, maintain my body fat, and get that all important six pack... and not feel guilty drinking it either ;) Oh and then there's my sleeping (or lack thereof) habits, but lets not get into that... thats Lindsey's job!

Traci has been with Rough-Fit for more than 3 years.

What motivated you to join Rough-Fit?
My intense boxing training finally led to a shoulder injury, and after months of physical therapy, I decided to have surgery. I realized that I would not be able to box for several months, and started to panic and fear that I would gain a ton of weight and lose all of the endurance I had developed. I decided that running would be the key and considered a running group, but I knew I would not enjoy the monotony. Thats when I discovered Rough-Fit. One conversation with Lindsey and I was sold. I knew that the diversity would keep me interested, and since I had never run a mile in my life, I knew I would need someone to motivate me. I also knew that the goal setting and evals would not only keep me on track, but make me aware of my accomplishments.

What exercise did you do prior to joining Rough-Fit?
I started taking boxing classes about 5 years ago. I was immediately hooked and loved my new-found energy and confidence. I attended classes 4 days a week and was much too focused on the intensity of the cardio, pushing myself to work harder. Then I started training one day a week one on one and began a grueling routine and low carb diet. I was in the best shape of my life, but always injuring myself. I would also beat myself up if I missed a class as I was convinced that if my workout was not intense cardio, I was a failure.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
I wanted to get comfortable with running and train for the Mud Run.

How long have you been in the program?
One year.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
The learning, variety, accountability and camaraderie. Within my first few sessions I also became aware that Rough-Fit was much more than a workout program. It is a night shared with friends, a therapy session and self-discovery.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Because the program is different each time, it prevents me from focusing on one thing I find particularly hard. This is very good for me because I tend to psyche myself out.

What progress have you made to date?
I have improved my running speed and distance. I have also learned that fitness is much more than burning calories and pushing yourself to the point of being sick. Its not about counting calories and being obsessive, its a spiritual adventure. I still take my boxing classes and love them as much as ever, but I have a much stronger foundation and injuries are a rarity.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
I have always been obsessed with counting calories and eliminating carbs from my diet, thus cheating myself from nutrition. By setting goals and holding myself accountable, I now eat balanced, nutritious meals.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
Rough-Fit has impacted my inner strength and ability to handle stress greatly. It has also increased my awareness of my entire body and how it functions.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Yes - it is addictive!

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My long term goal is to remain spiritually balanced with a healthy mind and body. The individual coaching I receive from Lindsey helps me to stay on track with who I am, what I want and how to get it.

Diane is a 3 year Rough-Fit veteran - and she certainly knows how to do those planks!

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
My neighbor bought Rough-fit for me as a Christmas present. She had previously talked to me about joining a morning exercise program...but I told her I could never get up that early since I'm not a morning person.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My goals were to find a program that would keep me physically fit, that didn't interfere with my work schedule, and that I would regularly attend.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I jogged and occasionally worked out at a women's gym (Linda Evans). I snowboard and cross country ski in the winter and hike in the summer.

How long have you been in the program?
Since January 2003

What do you enjoy most about the program?
The camaraderie and friendships I've made, and Lindsey's creativity in structuring the exercises to work out my entire body.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Yes because even after 8 months I still get stiffness after the workout day, indicating that Lindsey's found some new area to exercise.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Probably is just getting up and getting there. My day goes much better if I exercise first.

What progress have you made to date?
I haven't adjusted my eating habits, but have lot 5 pounds and lowered by body fat by 2 percentage points. While I've always been fairly fit, I could never do a regular pushup...at last evaluation I did 26.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I stand straighter and am definitely stronger.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Very easy after the first few sessions. I just lay out my clothes the night before and leave the house without thinking about sleeping in. If I didn't go, I would miss seeing other members. The only thing I'm giving up is sleep. There are always work emergencies during the day, or late meetings at night that used to interfere with regular exercise.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My long-term goals are just to stay fit. Rough-Fit has offered me variety and a schedule that works for me.

Fiona - showing the moms out there that they can still make exercise a priority.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I heard about Rough-Fit through a friend. I write a newsletter for a moms group that Im involved in, and she had written an article about Rough-Fit. About a month later, an opportunity came up to bid on a Rough-Fit session, and I won the bid. I loved Rough Fit from the very first day, and have been coming ever since.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
I had just got back into exercising after a four-year hiatus following the birth of my youngest daughter. I had trained for a 5K run and just completed it when I started Rough Fit. My main goal was to build an exercise habit back into my life.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
Where do I start?? Probably the biggest issue was strengthening my abs. I have been working on that since day one in Rough Fit. I really like the way that Lindsey focuses on strengthening core muscles during all of the workouts that we do. Im finally beginning to see some improvement there and Lindsey is great at encouraging me to keep working on it.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I used to run before I had kids, but hadnt really done anything for 4 years. In February I decided to sign up for a Memorial Day 5K just to give me something to aim for. When I started training in February for the 5K I couldnt even run one mile.

How long have you been in the program?
I started in May 2003.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
I like the variety of the workouts, and really enjoy the Friday hikes. Lindsey is always introducing new things, so the workouts never get boring.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
The workouts are great. I truly feel as though I am fit and in shape. I know that I am much stronger than I used to be. I like the fact that Rough-Fit is focused on complete fitness and not just on building up in one area. As a runner, the tendency is to focus just on running and not worry about anything else. With Rough-Fit I am definitely running better, but in addition, I am so much stronger at everything else.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
The most challenging part for me is remembering to constantly work my core muscles and maintain correct form. Luckily, Lindsey is great at noticing any problems and helping correct them. I have had a couple of knee surgeries, and she is great at making sure that I am strengthening those muscles thus helping to prevent additional injury.

What progress have you made to date?
The progress Ive made is amazing. I can now easily run 6 miles. I can also do push-ups, and just feel so much stronger and healthier than I did 5 months ago. I have lost weight and reduced my body fat without any special or gimmicky diet.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
I have always eaten a fairly healthy diet, but wasnt too good about drinking water. Now I drink water all the time. I also eat a lot more salads and veggies than I used to, and feel great.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I have much more energy and I handle stress much better than I used to. Even my family told me that I am much calmer these days. I also make working out a priority that I include in my schedule. The busier I get, the more important it is for me.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Getting up early was difficult at first, but it helped knowing that everyone else would be there and that Lindsey would call if I didnt show up. However, at the end of the workout I was always so glad that I had gone because I felt so great the rest of the day. Now, Im so used to getting up early that I wake up at the same time, even on the days I dont do Rough Fit.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
In the next year, Id really like to run a half-marathon. I know that the workouts with Rough Fit will help me to achieve that goal because Im continually building my overall fitness. Im already on my way to achieving my long-term goal which is to make fitness and a healthy lifestyle a part of my life.

Erin is another long-standing member and can really crank out those regular pushups - even when pregnant!

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
A flyer left at my front door. It was about 2 months after having my daughter (who is now 2 yrs old), and I wanted to lose weight before going back to work.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My goal was to fit back into my pre-pregnancy clothes before returning to work.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
I had just had a baby so overall I was heavier than usual but my stomach was the worst area.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I had gone to the gym, I had been doing a group weight training class for about a year twice a week. I would walk, rollerblade, etc. I took prenatal yoga during my pregnancy but I never really did anything with enough effort to make an impact.

How long have you been in the program?
I started Rough-Fit right before Thanksgiving of 2002.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
It is hard to list one thing. I enjoy working out in the outdoors. I enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from being evaluated regularly and seeing improvement. I enjoy the friends that I have made and the encouragement from everyone to try new things. And I really enjoy the days when Lindsey has us play games, it is a great way to start your day.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why?
Yes, the workouts are effective because Lindsey is there to push you more than you would if you were working out on your own. I have increased my upper body strength and achieved things that I never thought I would do, like run in the Camp Pendleton 10K Mud Run two years in a row.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
The most challenging part of the program is staying committed even when you dont feel like you are getting anywhere. There are times when I am really into working out 5 days a week and monitoring my eating and then there are times when I get in 3 days a week of working out and my eating is not the healthiest. But I have stayed active for two years and I am a better person for doing it.

What progress have you made to date?
I started out 2 years ago running/walking a mile and a half in 16 minutes or so, I have been able to improve that to under 12 minutes. I can do 41 full pushups in a minute and I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
This is still a battle for me. Lindsey has really put a lot of effort into this area of my health but I havent completely mastered it. I would say Lindseys persistence and commitment to healthy nutrition has been impressive and I know I am not an easy client when it comes to that. I have learned a lot from Lindsey and have been able to change several things.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I am more aware of what good nutrition is. I shop at Whole Foods and buy organic foods when I can. When I first started Rough-Fit I never stuck with anything very long, so I would say the biggest difference is the longevity in my exercise regimen. Lindsey has gotten me to do things that I never thought I would do and I am glad that she is always thinking about ways to spice things up for us.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
In some ways I would say yes. For example working out with the group of people that I see 3 mornings a week has made it easy and actually I dont want to stop seeing my friends (Nor do I want to get the calls from Lindsey). Sometimes after sleepless nights being up with a baby, it is hard to get up and work out at 6:00 am, but the majority of the time I do. It has been difficult to stay committed to the nutritional aspect but I will keep trying.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My long term goals are to maintain a healthy weight and to keep exercise as a foundation for my life. I would like my daughter to grow up with exercise as a part of her life not something she has to learn to do as an adult.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I was in San Francisco in November 2002 organizing a tradeshow when a good friend of mine told me about Rough-Fit during a phone conversation. I had just returned to my hotel from dinner, which consisted of a very rich meal and delicious, yet high calorie dessert. At that point, I just needed a "push" to try something new and different rather than forcing myself to the gym for yet another cycle of the same story - building some momentum, then dropping off due to a business trip or just plain laziness.
The idea of a 4-week goal-oriented program consisting of scheduled work-outs, diet counseling, and metrics appealed to me. Also, Rough-Fit sounded like a great way to make some new friends!

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit? My goals were to a) get back to working out on a regular basis b) begin eating right and c) eliminate some bad habits.

Did you have any specific trouble areas that you wanted to work on?
I wanted to lose weight, fit into my smaller clothes and get back to feeling good with the help of a healthier diet. I became used to eating out too often or eating the same foods with little variation which is why I burned out so often and yo-yo dieting became regular.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I've had the same gym membership for about 6 years. My exercise included walking on the treadmill for 30 to 45 minutes a few times a week, taking an occasional spin class or hot yoga (Bikram yoga). At times, I would start a new cycle with long brisk walks to the beach and back.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoy the challenge of the new exercises Lindsey introduces and the "go at your own pace" attitude. It gives me a great feeling when I know I've mastered a particular form needed to increase repetitions, speed, balance, etc. Also, since we're all different with our own set of strengths and weaknesses, the rate at which we achieve personal goals, etc. it gives me a feeling of accomplishment when I see improvements in my activities and weight-loss goals.

Do you think the workouts are effective and why? Absolutely! I never thought about form other than being cautious not to hurt myself. I now know that form is just as important to build core strength which is needed in everyday normal activity. Also, understanding that the brain is busy at work telling the muscle what to do and how to do it. As a result, I experience less back pain and leg pain (knees, especially) by strengthening my core through the variety of workouts.

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
On the diet side, giving up pasta and bread was extremely difficult. I love a good tuna sandwich on toasted white or squaw bread. But now, I grab a handful of Premium Salt-Free Crackers and munch on them with my meals. I find that I don't eat more than 4 or 5 and I don't miss pasta or bread as much as I thought I would.
On the physical side, running, hands down! I've never been a runner and it's taken a long time to commit to running. Even though I've been a member of Rough-Fit for the last 12 months, only about 8 weeks or so ago did I put my mind to learn how to run longer distances. I practice a combination of brisk walking intervals and running intervals at specific lengths. I'm increasing the length or amount of time I run while decreasing the length or distance I walk. I actually enjoy this activity and look forward to the day I can complete 1 running rotation around the park!

What progress have you made to date?
This is a difficult question to answer. I originally joined Rough-Fit with pretty much the same intentions as I have now, however, I wasn't fully committed. The light actually went "on" about 2 1/2 months ago after a routine doctor's appointment when my weight was registered at more than 15 lbs. above the weight I was when I first started Rough-Fit a year ago. Up until then, I spent the entire time thinking that by just attending the scheduled workouts, the rest would take care of itself in terms of meeting my goals. It was frustrating for Lindsey to watch me continue to beat myself up after a weight check with little or worse results. The realization hit home that I absolutely, positively had to make that commitment to myself that big changes HAD to be made. With Lindsey's guidance and support (as well as the rest of the group), I am now on my way. To date, I've lost 12 lbs. within two Rough-Fit sessions.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
Lindsey suggested...no...she made me go out and buy Dr. Phil's new book, "The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom". I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to overcome any type of difficulty in their life because it's an "in-your-face" reality check! While I'm still reading, I've done many of the self analysis exercises. Most of what I have gotten out of the book is very deep in behavior changes, including what I eat during the day. I now incorporate 3-4 servings of vegetables and fruits on a daily basis. Some of my snacks consist of only fruits and vegetables with an occasional handful of almonds when I have an attack of the 3:00 o'clock munchies!

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I love my foods, especially my own version of sauted broccoli or banana slices over cottage cheese (try this if you're a banana fan...you will never tire of this breakfast or snack). Now, I rarely care to go out to lunch or dinner because I crave the food that I have become accustomed to. And if I travel for business or pleasure, I'm not as excited to check out new restaurants, etc. Also, my digestive system is used to a healthier diet so I don't want to chance feeling ill or tiring out earlier than I like to. As for exercise, I love it.
I've incorporated an additional walk/run 1x to 2x a week with my dog, Pino. Talk about a motivator to run!!! I just feel so much better about myself, how my clothes fit and even trying on a size smaller than what I'm used to purchasing. If the item is too small, it's only slightly too small which means I've made some huge improvements and that makes me feel good!

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Pretty much. My parents visited me for 10 days. With a Sicilian and Northern Italian living with me, I almost dreaded the day of their arrival because I knew they both would cook up a storm of all my favorite foods. The reality is, they eat very healthy, so it was extremely easy to stay committed. Lots of fresh vegetables, barbequed chicken, steak and fish, not to mention homemade bean soup and lentils...shall I go on? Also, the more improvement I saw in the mirror and my own scale, the more committed I've become on a daily basis.

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
Long-term goals are many! The few that sit high on the list of priorities are a) continue to improve my eating habits by discovering healthier and satisfying foods and recipes b) enjoy easier runs without walking intervals c) reach my goal weight AND maintain it with the best combination of Rough-Fit and diet.

Lisa joined Rough-Fit in March 2003.

How did you learn about Rough-Fit and what motivated you to join?
I was surfing the internet looking for some type of workout that was in a group format and outside and stumbled upon Rough-Fit. After the first phone call and workout, I could tell that the philosophy, professionalism and challenging workouts were exactly what I was seeking.

What was your goal when you joined Rough-Fit?
My goal was to get into a regular workout routine and stick to it, while at the same time have fun, blow off some stress and feel stronger.

What exercise did you do prior to joining?
I was sporadic with the traditional avenues of the gym, walking/jogging, yoga, etc. but was very active in outrigger canoeing and enjoyed being outside and working my body hard.

What do you enjoy most about the program?
The continuous challenges of training my body in different ways, the accountability, the camaraderie and most of all the FUN!

What is the most challenging part of the program for you?
Besides getting up early, running was a challenge.

What progress have you made to date?
I am stronger, run faster with more ease (although I'll never say it is easy!) and have really learned about why it is important to train the whole body and constantly challenge it.

What specific items have helped you the most with regards to nutrition?
I learn from not only from Lindsey as she shares her knowledge about specific nutritional programs but also from other Rough-Fit members. I pretty much know what I need to do to eat healthy, but having additional knowledge such as where to get organic food or what type of vitamins others use or just simply writing down what I eat are all helpful tools in staying healthy.

How has this impacted your daily living and how are you different today vs. when you first started Rough-Fit?
I actually look forward to working out and seeing my improvements. Rough-Fit is my daily living. Taking care of my health and body so I can live long and strong is my main goal.

Has it been easy to stay committed?
Not really...there are too many people that hold me accountable and have become my friends. I know I'll have to answer to them and my excuses are never good enough!!

What are your long term goals and how do you see Rough-Fit complimenting those?
My long term goals are to continue to educate myself, challenge myself and hopefully help others educate themselves and encourage them to get involved in their own health and fitness. I see myself sticking around Rough-Fit for a long time, it just fits in my life!
