PHILA JABULA: COMRADES IN
HEALTH |
In June 2007 we plan on taking a group of 30 people on an unforgettable journey
to the country of South Africa. The aim is to run the Comrades Marathon a world-famous
54-mile race. We also saw this as a great opportunity to do something for the local
community.
While there the group will travel to Kayamandi, an informal settlement of about
20,000 people on the outskirts of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. Here they will
build a house for a family that has been affected by AIDS. This home-building mission
will be in collaboration with Horizon International, a non-profit organization serving
orphans affected by HIV and AIDS. Phila Jabula participants will also have an opportunity
to meet and sponsor children by contributing financially to their care and education.

Phila Jabula page.

ROUGH-FIT RUBBER BOOT RACE |
The Rough-Fit Rubber Boot Race is an initiative we started in January 2005.
In 2005 and 2006 we attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the largest
number of people to complete a race in rubber boots (Wellingtons). Although were
getting closer in our record-breaking attempt, the real success has been in the
funds raised.
We partnered with the City of Santa Ana (CA) to benefit their Park Naturalist Program
and both years managed to raise nearly $5,000 for their program.
The Park Naturalist Program assists inner-city children to become more involved
in outdoor activities. In addition to the activities at the nature preserve, the
program also offers presentations on aquatic life and water birds at the citys
Centennial Thornton park lakes and organizes family outings to nearby national forests
and regional wildlife areas. Some 1,800 youth and adult volunteers participate in
projects such as tree planting, water quality monitoring and habitat restoration
each year. As an outdoor fitness company, this seemed to be the perfect project
for us to contribute to and with the help of some generous sponsors have managed
to make a real impact.
The Rubber Boot Race is also a great opportunity for members of the community to
meet their neighbors, get a healthy workout and support the beautiful local park.

TUSTIN RELAY FOR LIFE |
In 2004 the City of Tustin (CA) had its first Relay for Life to raise money for
research and programs for the American Cancer Society.
Lindsey Fernandez owner of Rough-Fit chaired the Food and Beverage committee.
She organized the donations of food and beverages from several companies to facilitate
feeding 800 people 2 meals and snacks over the 24-hour period of the relay.
Our clients had 2 teams at the event and collectively raised more than half the
funds for the entire city. One of our client teams raised the most money by a single
team and one individual was the winner of the most funds raised by a single person.
Relay for Life is an overnight event where teams of people take turns walking laps
for 24 hours to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

TSUNAMI AID |
When the devastating Tsunami hit South and South East Asia on December 26, 2004,
it really struck close to home for one of our members. Amanthis parents worked
at a resort in Sri Lanka, and although there were a lot of great organizations to
donate to at the time, Rough-Fit and its members saw this as a way of making a visible
difference.
With Rough-Fit matching client contributions dollar for dollar we managed to raise
more than $1,200 to send directly to Amanthis parents.
They identified 4 families who were sleeping on the beach under coconut trees after
losing everything. Amanthis father used some of the money to help these 4 families
build temporary housing so they wouldnt have to sleep out in the open. They also
helped them to replace some cooking utensils and other necessary household items.
One of the more heart wrenching stories was that of a young boy named Shirohan who
lost his grandparents in the Tsunami. The money his mother received helped him to
get back to school. Shirohan wrote us this letter: |
